A leading UK insurance provider has emphasised how important it is for pet owners to take out cover on their animals.
Tesco Personal Finance's representatives stated that recent figures released by a charity showed that owning a dog in particular can cost a household over £13,000.
According to the Dogs Trust, a dog lives for between 13 and 15 years on average, while costs of looking after the animal tend to total around £1,000 over twelve months.
However, Tesco Pet Insurance's Allan Burns said it is "quite common" for pet owners to not take out cover which could help them if their dogs fall ill.
"More than half of dog owners have taken their dogs to the vet in the last two years - if you are not insured, there's a hefty price to pay," he added.
InsureandGo also recently urged people to ensure they have travel insurance when they travel abroad.
Perry Wilson, a spokesperson for the specialist broker, said that consumers need to be aware that cover is not just there to protect them if flights are cancelled.
